With Halloween upon us, the obligatory costume pictures have started appearing on various social networks from early parties. Halloween is my 4th favorite holiday (behind New Year’s, Christmas and Thanksgiving) and 2nd favorite going out holiday (behind New Years but before 4th of July) so I feel a responsibility to bring to your attention one very important issue: costume selection.
To quote “Mean Girls”: “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” False. It is irritating and annoying when chicks turn simple, ordinary things into the whore equivalent. Examples: animals/insects (bunny, bee, cheetah), occupations (doctor, policeman), angel/devils, childhood characters (cartoons, Mrs. Santa Claus), etc. You know what I’m talking about. While I understand why guys love the hell out of this, I dislike it mainly because it completely lacks creativity or originality.
Men are equally guilty of this. Vampires, zombies, killing popular culture references (dick in a box, the Joker), dressing in drag, porn stars. These are all about as creative as wearing a tuxedo t-shirt and claiming you have on formal wear.
If the pictures I’ve already seen from this year’s festivities are any indication, know that we’re going to see a lot of Alice in Wonderland characters and Lady Gaga’s. While I actually think the Alice in Wonderland theme is pretty neat, it was a lot better last year or sometime before it got overplayed.
Now I know that not everyone is all that into this holiday and I suppose that in the end, I’d rather a person throw on some fangs with their regular clothes then do nothing, but I want to encourage creativity this year. And–if you need another reason to get original, I promise you that something interesting will receive far more comments (read: more opportunities for meeting people/making out/sex/future dates, whichever you prefer). So in an effort to assist you in your costume selection, I present a small list of ideas I’ve come across that I thought were interesting/unusual/hilarious:
I don’t know if I’m partial to this because I love the claymation Christmas movies so much, but I think this is great. I really enjoy full suit costumes just because they’re kind of silly and something you don’t see a lot. Unfortunately, these types of costumes are a bit costly, even to rent but I think worth it if you can swing it.
A tree
This is taking something so ordinary and simple and making it really interesting and great. This can be done with anything if you just take the time to think about it.
WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS?!?! This is amazeballs and could also be done in a group with the other characters. Related: Fraggle Rock.
Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love
If you’re low on funds and/or time, I thought this was a pretty good idea. Tell me you don’t have this costume already in your closet. It would really need to be a couple costume I think in order for people to get it, but who says a dude can’t play Courtney Love? Don’t forget the cocaine.
Carmen Sandiego
Someone told me the other day that this is their costume this year (so sorry for stealing your idea) but this is a good one. And as long as we’re on the topic of childhood games, how about Oregon Trail? Something to think about.
I just ran across this on the Metromix website. It’s a pretty simple costume and really, you’d only need to get yourself some grey colored hair spray and a giant check.
I’m not trying to claim that I’m some genius costume thinker-upper, but it’s always fun to see interesting ideas. What was your favorite Halloween costume you wore yourself or saw on somebody else?

My friend was a tree a few years back. He actually wore tree bark, moss, and a fake bird. The costume weighed damn near 40 lbs and left tree bark EVERYWHERE. In other words, it was a total success!
Me as Alice and Sean as the Mad Hatter was a lot of fun.
I was Tyra Banks one year and walked around carrying model’s photos with the ANTM logo on the back. It was fun to tell people “I have 3 photos…*blinkblinkblink*..in my hands…” When they asked who I was.
I also played Gwen Stefani one year. The blonde wig was fun.
I’m kinda fucked for this year because I’m moving and working, but if all else fails I’ll be Antoine(tte) Dodson. Funny and easy.
I’ve been searching in google for some items and accidentally found this thisislifeandlove.wordpress.com website. I can see that you are a pro at your field! I am going to launch a website soon, and your info will be very useful for me. Thank you for the excellent work and wishing you the success in your business.
